What is an off-grid power system?
An off-grid power system is a generating system that provides electrical power to a home or site that does not have access to the power grid. In its simplest form it would be a fossil fueled generator. However, due to the high cost of fossil fuels most off-grid systems today consist of generators, inverters, batteries and alternative energy sources such as wind and solar. These systems provide continuous power and are often automatic in operation. When designed properly these systems minimize fossil fuel consumption in the generation electrical power.

Solar Water Heating:
Residential hot water systems can use solar collectors to preheat the water that is coming in to your existing gas or electric water heater. The warmer the water coming from the solar pre-heater, the less gas or electricity is required to heat the water to the desired temperature. During the summer months, a properly sized solar hot water system will provide almost 100% of a households needs, and on an annual basis they will provide approximately 60% - 70% of the energy needed to heat household water. Solar Assist/Gas, Oil or Wood Furnace Backup System:
In-floor radiant space heating uses hot water delivered to tubing built into the floor to heat the house. Because radiant heating heats objects and not the air, it is much more efficient than conventional forced-air furnaces. While the initial cost is higher (typically 30% - 40%) than conventional heating, the annual operating cost of radiant heating is nearly 20% - 30% less. Over the life of the home, radiant floor heating pays for itself without using solar energy. While other more basic strategies include orienting the building to maximize southern exposure for solar space heating, super-insulation and day-lighting to reduce daytime lighting loads.
Solar power systems are less expensive to own and operate than an engine generator. While the upfront cost of an engine generator is less than a solar electric power system, over the life of the engine generator, the cost of fuel, maintenance, and replacement parts exceed the cost of a solar electric generator.
